Sweet Bird of Youth
Written by Tennessee Williams
Directed by Dale Calandra
The Artistic Home at 3914 N Clark
Both lyrical and lurid, Sweet Bird of Youth resonates as strongly as ever in a culture obsessed with controlling the sands of time. Williams masterfully unfolds his story of local boy gone bad Chance Wayne and his drunken, temperamental companion, faded movie star Princess Kosmonopolis, amidst a backdrop of small town narrow-mindedness, oil-rich politicians and heightened racial tensions.
When Chance returns to St. Cloud on Easter Sunday to reclaim his childhood sweetheart, he is forced by Princess and fate to face the brutal truth -- lost innocence is impossible to resurrect but shame and regret live on forever.
Sweet Bird of Youth reunited director Dale Calandra with former Center Theatre Ensemble colleague and Artistic Home Artistic Director Kathy Scambiatterra, who played the role of Princess. Chance Wayne was played by Guest Artist Josh Odor. Other cast members included Artistic Home Ensemble Members Elizabeth Argus andKristin Collins, as well as guest artists Brandon Boler, Miguel Cohen, Lynne Hall, Sean Murphy, Tim Musachio, Keith Neagle, C. Sean Piereman, Brennan Roach, and veteran stage actor Richard Henzel.
Costumes were designed by Lynn Sandberg, set designed by Mike Mroch, props designed by Gretel Ulyshen, lighting designed by Jeff Glass and sound designed by Adam Smith. The Assistant Director was Artistic Home Associate Kaiser Ahmed; and the Stage Manager was Loretta Rode. Assistant Stage Manager was Justin Vaisnor. Dramaturgy was by Matt Ciavarella.
